All study animals and any moribund animals selected by the Attending Veterinarian to be removed from a study early will be anesthetized and/or euthanized with an appropriate anesthetic or euthanasia agent.
TPA understands that the necropsy task cannot be duplicated and must be done in a thorough and accurate manner the first time and strictly within the parameters of the approved research protocol. A 100% accountability of lesions and tissues is mandatory for subsequent histologic evaluation as well as complete correlation of gross lesions with microscopic findings.
Collection of protocol required organ weights. All tissues that require organ weights to be taken are placed in a petri dish during the necropsy. The petri dish is lined with paper moistened with saline to prevent the tissues from drying out. The tissues are transported to the weigh station in a covered petri dish with the animal ID card. The weights may be recorded manually or captured automatically in a data collection program.
